About the Journal

The Wittenberg University East Asian Studies Journal is a widely accepted and highly regarded journal, which is completely written, edited, and published by undergraduate students. The purpose of the Journal is to encourage undergraduates, from both Wittenberg as well as other universities, to pursue scholarly inquiry into East Asian topics, ranging from political analyses to calligraphy samples. One of two journals in the United States devoted to undergraduates, the Wittenberg University East Asian Studies Journal seeks to broaden scholarly and popular perspectives on East Asia through works of high academic quality, which are read by the local and international community alike.

Focus and Scope

The student staff selects academic articles and creative pieces (including paintings, drawings and photography) having to do with East Asia, regardless of whether they are written from a Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or integrative perspective. No limitations are placed on the academic area from which works are written, as writings from all disciplines are welcome. Pieces come from undergraduates at Wittenberg as well as around the nation and the world.

Publication Frequency

The Journal is published annually in the spring.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Journal History

The Wittenberg University East Asian Studies Journal was initiated by a group of students in 1975, and has been issued annually since this time. The Journal was published online for the first time in 2013. From the beginning students have directed all creative and managerial processes related to publication. Funded by Wittenberg University Student Senate, the Journal is an entirely student initiated and student directed endeavor, the major goal of which is to afford students the opportunity to participate in the rich scholarly dialogue of those interested in East Asia. As such, all decisions regarding the Journal, including the use of its name, will be made by the student editors in conjunction with the support provided by Student Senate.
